The two-headed eagle appears across many Indigenous Oaxacan traditions. It represents duality — light and shadow, life and death, body and spirit — the idea that opposites aren't in conflict, but in balance. In this workshop, you will learn to embroider this symbol using the "pata de gallo" stitch, a traditional technique from the coast of Oaxaca. Xitlalic will walk you through the logic of the stitch and how it's applied, and share the historical and symbolic context of the emblem along the way. No prior experience needed. All materials are included. The workshop is led by Hilda Xitlalic López Méndez, founder of Milagros Textiles — a clothing brand that incorporates traditional embroidery and fabrics into modern design. With over 15 years of experience, she has traveled to communities across Oaxaca and Chiapas to learn local techniques firsthand, and has taught textile design and embroidery at universities in Mexico, the United States and Spain.
